IRCC is updating its process to make things simpler and more efficient while continuing to support international students and improve services.
Starting April 1, 2026, eligible international post-secondary students will no longer need a separate work permit for required work placements like co-op terms or internships. Instead, they can complete these placements under their study permit, as long as the employer is approved by their school.
This change reduces paperwork and extra IRCC administrative step by letting students use one permit for their entire program.
Students who already applied for a co-op work permit and are waiting for a decision do not need to do anything. IRCC will cancel all eligible and active co-op work permit applications.
